MA in Christian Formation and Soul Care

The Master of Arts in Christian Formation and Soul Care focuses on developing competency in the ancient Christian ministries of spiritual friendship and spiritual direction. The program explores biblical and historical examples of soul care, principles of spiritual formation, wisdom of the spiritual classics, dynamics of the spiritual journey, the practice of soul care, spiritual guidance in multicultural contexts and practical training in the art of spiritual guidance.

The MA in Christian Formation and Soul Care is excellent preparation for goals such as:
  • Spiritual Direction in church and retreat settings

  • Pastoral, teaching and leadership positions inclined toward formation, soul care and discipleship

  • Further education and training leading to teaching in university and seminary contexts

Structure

In addition to the MA core, the MA in Christian Formation and Soul Care involves 32 hours of courses specific to Christian Formation and Soul Care (24 hours of required courses plus 4 hours of electives and 4 hours for a project or thesis):

  • Counseling courses (5 hrs): Human Development and Counseling, Therapeutic Counseling, Group Experience

  • Christian Formation and Soul Care Courses (18 hrs): Biblical & Theological Foundations of Formation and Soul Care, Principles and Practice of Christian Formation, Dynamics of the Spiritual Journey, Practice of Soul Care, Creating Transformational Cultures and Communities, Soul Care Practicum I & II, Readings from the Spiritual Masters II, Christian Formation and Soul Care Intensive, Integrative Seminar in Christian Formation and Soul Care

  • Choice of Electives (4 hrs): Brief Counseling, Personal Life of the Christian Leader, Formational and Healing Prayer, Christian Formation and Soul Care in Multicultural Contexts, Skill Development in Soul Care, Readings from the Spiritual Masters I, Use of Scripture in Soul Care, Studies in Christian Formation and Soul Care

  • Choice of Thesis or Project (4 hrs)
